Mellow Gold

I long avoided Beck after hearing his popular Loser and MTV Makes me want to Smoke Crack on the radio, and some of his older stuff (from Golden Feelings to Stereopathetic Soulmanure), considering him to be a Ween rip-off. Finally, curiousity got the better of me and I decided to check out the rest of his stuff after reading the Lollapalooza interviews. One of the lo-fi acts to make it big, it seems to me most people who'd have liked Loser or MTV wouldn't have liked most of the album. There's no doubt that there's a strong resemblance to Ween in some of the tunes, but Beck is pretty original and my hasty misjudgement earlier certainly didn't do him justice. The tunes are a cool and self-indulgent collection of lo-fi pop tunes with a lot of noise and weird effects thrown in. Throwing in some rap and hip-hop stuff, Beck comes up with a pretty unique style all on his own.
